The story covers the scams being carried out by unethical locksmiths across the country. Dispatched from New York and other states unskilled employees are being sent to provide locksmith emergency services. Prices are usually 3 to 10 times more than quoted on the phone.

Locksmith emergency services scam locked out citizens in several states. Large ads and many local listings that remote forward to distant switchboards have made fly by night companies too easy to find.

Another way to avoid the companies being accused of Consumer Fraud is to hang up if the locksmith you call asks for your zip code or state. Beware of any locksmith that says the service call is so much. Labor and materials are not quoted on the phone by the bad locksmiths.

More than two years after she was victimized by Priceline locksmiths, a letter from the Illinois Attorney General's office and a check for a full refund have been received by this senior citizen. She was one of the first consumers to complain of being over-charged by a locksmith to get back into her home after locking her keys in the house. "It took a long time but I was glad to receive the letter and the refund", she told Kathy Zaniolo, owner of PHS Locksmith

Most out-of-state locksmiths ask for your state or zip code. They have often quoted a low "service call" price. When the locksmith showed up, he added the "labor" which was quite high as stated in complaints by consumers. Be careful!

In following up on many consumer complaints, the State of Illinois has suspended the license of one out-of-state locksmith. This locksmith advertised under multiple names and local addresses but actually operated from another state.
